U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.95%
Investing.com - Wall Street traded lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.95%, the S&P 500 index lost 1.38%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 2.14%.
Among the actives were Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Tesla (TSLA).
Top gainers of the session for the 30-stock index were Microsoft (MSFT), which rose 3.61% or 6.85 points to trade at 194.58 at the close. Meanwhile, Apple Inc (AAPL)
added 2.87% or 3.75 points to end at 134.42 and Visa Inc (V) was up 2.69% or 5.33 points to 198.37 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Nike Inc (NKE), which fell 6.32% or 10.19 points to trade at 151.79 at the close. Boeing Co (BA) declined 5.65% or 7.44 points to end at 126.05 and Intel (INTC) was down 5.38% or 2.39 points to 41.61.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.57% to 29.99 a new 1-month high.
Earnings Season
The earnings calendar is winding down, but reports from 155 S&P 500 companies are expected in the week ahead.
So far, S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings have surprised to the upside by 3.96%, below the 5-year average of 4.78% but above the 10-year average of 3.40%, according to Refinitiv data. The technology sector has delivered the biggest upsides, at 8.61%, above its 5-year average of 6.65%.
Out of 260 S&P 500 companies that have reported, 74.6% have beaten consensus, a hair above the 73% 5-year average.
The S&P 500 companies that have delivered earnings so far have seen an average move of 1.31% on their earnings reaction days, which is below the 5-year average of 1.99%. The current average move is also below the 10-year average of 1.43%, according to Refinitiv.
Of the 33 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported through Thursday, 23 have topped Wall Street earnings estimates,above the average beat rate of 73%.
But among those companies that have reported, 18 have delivered revenue above Wall Street estimates, slightly below the 5-year average of 73%.
