Airtouch Communications Inc. was a mobile telecommunications company based in the United States. The company was established in 1986 as Pacific Telesis Mobile Services, a subsidiary of Pacific Telesis Group, and was later renamed AirTouch Communications in 1994.
AirTouch Communications was one of the largest wireless telecommunications companies in the United States, providing wireless voice and data services to millions of customers through its GSM and CDMA networks. The company was known for its innovative products and services, including the first nationwide digital wireless network in the US and the introduction of text messaging.
In 2000, AirTouch Communications merged with Vodafone Group, a British telecommunications company, to form Verizon Wireless, one of the largest mobile telecommunications companies in the world. Prior to the merger, AirTouch Communications was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol "ATC".
Today, Verizon Communications, the successor to Verizon Wireless, continues to provide wireless telecommunications services in the United States and is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA).
